default
Posted on Mon, 20 Jun 2016
Question: What do you think is causing this problem. Sometimes upon waking and after long periods of reading when I look left or right I hear a zzt, zzt, noise, and I fee some type of vertigo or disconnection. I have nerve damage to C 4,5, & 6. I have had this occur acne for approximately 15 years. It comes and goes. At times this also makes me feel very anxious.

Brief Answer:
Need to do MRI brain for further evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

The causes of sound in ear (tinnitus) and vertigo can be an ear disease or nerve disease.

Since your ear examination is within normal limits, we need to look at brain related causes.

This would include ruling out ischemia (lack of blood flow to brain), tumours of hearing nerve, and any abnormal blood vessels near the hearing nerve. These conditions can be diagnosed/excluded by MRI of brain.

Nerve damage of cervical nerves (as in your case) can also cause vertigo, however, the abnormal sounds are not heard in this. Physiotherapy and neck exercises would help in this condition.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
