Does Caffeine Cause Chronic Diarrhea?

default
Posted on Sat, 11 Jul 2015
Question: Can caffeine cause chronic diarrhea? (Note: this is a follow up question to a problem I had all year.) I had chronic diarrhea from late February till May 15. Nothing worked. I had a stool specimen and stool culture done. Both negative. My eosinophil result was 1535, markedly higher than my normal of 200 or less. (I get a CBC every 3 months do to I take Humira for rheumatoid arthritis.) I finally gave up on coffee and BOOM within a week I was back to normal. But my Dr. said it wasn't the coffee. He said I probably picked up a parasite that the lab couldn't detect. I'm not going to go back to my dr with your comments but I would like another opinion. Why can't coffee be the culprit?

Brief Answer:
All is well that ends well, Both caffeine plus parasite

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Chronic diarrhea has multiple causes. With your raised eosinophils yes the probability of a parasitic infection causing it is more likely and with advancing age that is more likely.

However you are right as well, any stimulant including caffeine can predispose to diarrhea as well. And quitting or reducing caffeine always helps with diarrhea. Also reducing dairy products and soy products as well.

Nut shell raised eosinophil needs parasitic deworming by albendazole stat dosage or praziquantel or any other anti parasitic meds and diet and lifestyle modifications with Banana, rice applesauce , Toast ( BRAT diet) and fibrous preferences. Consider probiotics.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.
