Does Discontinuation Of Topomax Worsen Fibromyalgia?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Feb 2015
Question: Hi. I stopped taking my 200 mg daily dose of topomax a few weeks ago in hopes my migraines would improve and instead they got worse as did my fibro. My fibro is now at a very painful point and I'm wondering if this could be related to me stopping the topomax?

Brief Answer:
may have controlled your fibromyalgia somewhat

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is is possible that the discontinuation of the topamax would have affected your fibromyalgia.

It is not typically used for fibromyalgia but with its mechansim of action , it is possible that it may modulate or affect pain transmission by interaction with certain neurotransmitters (chemicals involved in the transmission of nerve impulses such as pain) and along certain channels.

Because it can affect the transmission of pain then it possible that even though you were using it for migraines it may have also helped the fibromyalgia somewhat.
This means that discontinuation of topamax , which may have been having some effect on controlling the fibromyalgia somewhat, may be the reason for more pain.

I hope this helps ,feel free to ask any other questions
