Question : My mother has chronic cold symptoms with nasal discharge, and hoarse voice at times, cough at times. This is there all the time now. She has tried over the counter cold medicines and ayurvedic treatment with temporary relief.
Any specific treatment for this. Does eating curd and other foods aggrevate this?

                                    Brief Answer:
It seems to be chronic pharyngitis
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Since ts been there for long time, it should be investigated. I will suggest the following tests:
- Complete blood count with ESR
- Sputum culture and sensitivity
- Chest Xray PA view
- An examination by an ENT Specialist
It seems like chronic pharyngitis. Does she have acidity and reflux of stomach acid in throat? Does she have a weight loss?
A course of antibiotic maybe needed after report of sputum culture and sensitivity is available. Till then she can take tab cetrizine when symptoms are bad. Drink cleaner water with low ppm.
Hope it helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks for your reply Doctor. She does have chronic acidity and is on long-term medications (Sompraz 40 and Lesuride). Can she eat curd, any food restrictions?

                                    Brief Answer:
It maybe caused by reflux disease
Detailed Answer:
Hi again
This sore throat that lasts all the time maybe caused by gastroesophagal reflux disease in which the stomach acid regurgitates into the throat and causes irritation. Still the above tests are needed.
Curd and milk can worsen bacterial infection of throat but are helpful in acidity. If these are making things worse, then these must not be taken.
