Brief Answer:
Total calories consumed and total calories burned matters and frequency matter

Detailed Answer:
Dear friend, Greetings from HCM. Yes sweets are not advisable regularly as they increase your blood sugar levels faster. They are called as high glycemic index foods and must be avoided. Better to take complex carbohydrates which are digested slowly and maintain the blood sugar levels constant . Add lots of fiber rich food stuff , millets, green leafy vegetables and fruits.
You can walk and practice meditation and yoga to keep you fit. Lifestyle changes matter a lot to prevent obesity and diabetes. Avoid stress , eat in time divide your meal in to 4 to 5 small parts with good amount of fluids , variety of green leafy vegetables and fruits better to keep changing every week.
Check your glucose levels, HbA1c, lipid profile once in a year .
