Question: My oxygen saturation drops below 90% constantly. I have trouble with both my long and short term memory. Can this be the cause?

Brief Answer:
See Neurologist, conditions probably NOT related

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for the query,

I am afraid that these could not be really related. Memory , both long term and short term involve specific areas of the brain. Short term memory is related to malfunction of a part called the hippocampus and long term with the covering layer of the brain called the cortex.

Low oxygen levels in the brain would be associated first with signs and symptoms of fits, loss of function of specific areas like limbs, speach problems, paralysis (like seen in stroke).

A low oxygen saturation cannot have a preferential effect on the memory centres in the brain. Considering the fact that both short term and long term memory are affected, the opinion of neurologist is imperative.

A detailed history is required to ascertain exactly when the memory issues started, before the removal of part of the lung or after. A Ct scan at some point might be of utmost importance.

These, in my opinion would hardly be related and I suggest you consult with a neurologist. Kind regards,

Dr Bain
