Does Had Botox Injections Into The Facial Area Cause Trigeminal Neuralgia Issue?

default
Posted on Wed, 22 May 2024
Question: Hi, doctor. I had botox injections into the facial area which I have had many times prior for trigeminal neuralgia issue. This time was different, however. One of the injections into the cheek somehow leaked into one nasal cavity - again, something I never saw before. Injections were done 6 weeks ago and symptoms have abated some. Initially, inside of one side of nose was flame red with what looked like a cut in side of nostril. As I write to u now, the redness is minimal, cut is all but healed and I literally see some white sticky strings of botox leaking out. Which I am sure is a good thing since as u know, botox is temporary. I did tell the doctor about this and he has prescribed an anti viral med. My question is should I just leave this alone, possibly do a nose flush - either now or down the road?
Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Brief Answer:
Saline nasal douching would suffice

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for submitting the inquiry.

Your problem is clear to me now that I have read your query.

Washing with saline nasally should be enough to flush out any residual Botox, as you correctly pointed out.

In the past, there was an infection that went away after taking medication after getting Botox injected into the nasolabial fold or alae of the nose. Additionally, the collection near the nasal mucosa has vented, leaving just a tiny opening through which the Botox and inspissated secretions are continuously expelled.

Rest assured! With time, this would become clear. Nasal douching with saline is required.

I hope this addresses your question. Please let me know if you need any further clarification.

Doctor, just want to clarify. Just took a XXXXXXX flashlight to get a much closer look and it is not a pimple inside that nostril but a very small blackish indentation on the nostril that looks like the skin has been burned off in a tiny circle. Considering the initial irritation from the botox 6 weeks ago, appears it may have burned into the nostril itself in this one tiny spot. Just wanted to see if the nasal solution will possibly help with that as well. Thank u.

Hi, doctor. Unfortunately, unable to download a pic of small indentation in that nostril caused by botox. Last question, though, I can actually see some thickness of the botox that has adhered to side of nostril. It does leak out but very very slowly. Will this botox eventually dissolve as botox is known to do in 3 to 4 months? It's now been about 7 weeks since injection and just wanted to get your feedback on whether this botox being in nostril will dissolve eventuallly? Thank u so much for all your advice and help.

Brief Answer:
Botox oozing must eventually be resolved.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Welcome back

Nothing to worry about if you can not capture the image. The dripping botox has to stop at some point. Maintain consistent use of saline nasal spray.

A CT scan of the sinuses can help rule out infection if the oozing does not stop after two to three weeks.

This should put your questions to rest. I hope you feel better soon.
