Question : On behalf of my husband my question is can a hernia cause a sharp intermittent pain in the lower right back?

Isolated Back pain due to hernia is very unlikely.
Detailed Answer:
Hi I am Dr Gopal Goel Orthopedic Surgeon.
In my opinion hernia is unlikely to cause sharp lower back pain directly but there can be transmitted pain or pain due to muscle spasm if the loops in hernia are strangulated. In this case ( strangulations) there would be other symptoms like severe pain abdomen, nausea ., vomiting also along with back pain and abdominal pain.
Isolated Back pain due to hernia is very unlikely.
