Does Intake Of Levofloxacin Help In Curing Cold And Cough?

Posted on Wed, 13 Apr 2016
Question: Have had a cold since mid November, Went to Urgent care after a week. Put on Lexapro. was better for a few weeks and still had cough. Went to Dr. today. Put me on Levofloxacin. Read side effects-not happening. Too scared to try this for 10 days. Waiting for results of chest x-ray. Isn't there something safer?

It's a very loose cough. With wheezing and then clears when I cough. I haven't heard report on chest x-ray as of yet. It was at urgent care diagnosed as Bronchitis. Just didn't like the side effects of the Levofloxacin. Have arthritis, and no thyroid. Also Rheumatic fever at age 7 and have leaky heart valves which I am monitored yearly for. I am active and otherwise healthy. The side effects have me really nervous. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Unlikely bacterial infection, complete work up advised.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. COld since november followed by cough is normal sequelae. Post nasal dripping in cold irritates the throat and may cause allergic dry cough. Unless the fever or raised leukocytes or wheezy creptus chest, bacterial infection suspicion is highly unlikely and should be avoided for any antibiotic like levofloxacin.

Salt water gargles. some decongestants, some advil and home remedies like garlic and green tea, warm comforting beverages and humidified air are the commonest treatment modalities here.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

Brief Answer:
Taking levofloxacin is wise

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getitng back to me

With suspicion of bronchitis, i suggest you take levofloxacin. The side effects are with every medicine does not mean you will get them or all of it. Its quite less proportion of people who get it. You may discontinue if your symptoms dont get improved or any side effect bothers you. But right now taking levofloxacin for at least 7 days is wise.

I hope it helps.
