Question: Re diabetes: Hi Dr.P from before, 1) If I get hot right after I eat, is this an indication of diabetes even if I eat a healthy meal. What does it mean? 2) I'm always waking up hot & sweaty at 3 am from sleep. 3) The diabetic dietician mentioned that maybe I should see my regular PCP in 2 m onths to consider going on Metformin. That's when my sugar level before breakfast was running 130 before breakfast. Yesterday I cheated I ate 1 chocolate cupcake & 1/4 of sour dough pastry & tried to rub off the cinnamon.heavy sugar coating; this was highest it's been 157. So I'm trying to be strict today. Do you have some more suggestions for me.
How safe is Netformin, Metformin? Could I wait to go on it? I'm supposed to see the new Nurse Practiioner in July. THank you so much for your help. XXXXXXX XXXX

I want Dr. Jeyapathy to answer pls. He knows my case. Thanks.. XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your message.
I think I can help you.
First, the heating is common.
When someone eats food the body always get heated up.
It's the increase in the metabolism that causes the heating.
There is nothing to worry about .

Second , I suggest that you buy a glucometer.
The sweating at 3 am sounds like hypoglycaemia.
It's a phenomenon medically known as Somogyi effect.
Of course, you will need to take some food or sugar at the time.
It's not safe to have hypoglycaemia, so I recommend that you do this as soon as possible.

As for diet, I think you should be comfortable and as you have decided be strict about the food.

metformin is one of the safest medicines used for diabetes. I however would recommend that you monitor sugar at 3 timrs- before breakfast, lunch and dinner. In view of the hypoglycaemia episode, I would be cautious if prescribing the medicine.

Do let me know the sugars for further suggestions.
Best of luck. Dr Mittal
