Does Intake Of Prednisone Cause Unquenchable Thirst?

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Jun 2016
Question: does prednisone 50mg or ciprofloxacin 2x daily by mouth cause unquenchable thirst?? I've taken 2 out of 5 prednisone and 4 out of 14 cipro pills but just noticed this today. I'm normally a 64-72oz a day fluid drinker(I only drink water or decaf tea) but today I can't seem to quench my thirst for more then an hour or less at a time. I've noticed increased urination and frequency as well but I'm assuming that's due to my increased fluid intake. should I be concerned enough to take action or take a watch and wait approach??

I do take metformin 500mg 2x a day but I'm NOT diabetic.....I take it for poly cystic ovarian syndrome. I also take xarelto 20mg in the morning after they found two confirmed blood clots in my leg November of 2015

Brief answer....prednisone may cause increased thirst
Detailed answer.....
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
Out of two medicines you mentioned, prednisone has the tendency to cause increased thirst.
This can be possible because of two reasons.
1st ...it results in sodium retention resulting in increased thirst
2nd...it tends to increase the blood sugar levels which again can cause increased thirst.
Well whether prednisone, indeed is causing this,I am not very sure.
However just wait and watch and keep drinking water.
Good thing is that you are supposed to take it for just another 3 days more.
If prednisolone is indeed causing it,then you would get reprieve from it.
In the mean time do get your blood sugar levels also checked.
I hope it helps, however you are most welcome to revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks

Thanks so much for you quick and clear response. I will get my sugar checked at my gp this morning as I'm going to have my condition reassessed as he had requested. In the mean time I've heard its possible to get seriously I'll from drinking too much water. My question is is this true and how much is too much?? I'm 234lbs if that helps

Hello,
Although the amount of water a person needs depends on the work he does, living in hot climate, sweating a lot or living at high altitude etc but the basic recommendation of food and nutrition board is to take around 2.7 litres of water in a day ( around 91 ounces ).
Maximum allowed limit is to take 27-34 ounces of water every hour ( 800 - 1000ml )
before you have a net gain in water, where cells become swollen with fluid and you retain water. This is the stage beyond which you can develop side effects of over consumption of water.
I hope it clears the matter for you.
Thanks
