Does Intake Of Vesicare And Miralax Cause An Increase In A1C Levels?

Posted on Wed, 27 Apr 2016
Question: I am female, 70 years old, with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease. I use Lantus and Novolog flexpens for my insulin. About 2 months ago I started taking Vesicare (and Miralax for the constipation side effect of Miralax) for overactive bladder. Last week my A1C came back 13!!! Never been anywhere near that high. One before this was 5. My personal glucometer does not indicate that it should be high. I test twice daily. Could the Vesicare, or the Miralax be causing the high A1C?

Brief Answer:
No

Detailed Answer:
To my knowledge of published medical literature, there is no evidence that vesicare or miralax raise blood glucose levels significantly enough or at all to explain the marked rise in A1c that you have noticed.

If your home readings are modest then there is a possibility of a falsely high A1c. I agree if you have chosen the same laboratory and they are using the same method as before when they recorded your good value ie 5, then this is hard to explain. However if either of those two scenarios is different now then repeat the A1c with a different lab or method.
