Does Music Help In Studying?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: I am currently in the eleventh grade. I enjoy studying while listening to soft instrumental music; medieval music to be particular. I do not get easily distracted if I practice this. Will this affect my focus, concentration, efficiency? If so, could you please tell me how can I stay determined, focused?

Lately I have also started studying late in nights, because I feel I have double the focus and concentration during that time, but then I have to compromise on my sleep, I sleep 5 hours in night, and another 4 in afternoon, will this affect my studies?

Brief Answer:
Studies

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Many students study with soft music on and this apparently helps them stay focused, however clinical studies have shown that students who studied in a quiet place fared better than students who listened to music and studied in terms of recall and implementation.

You can study at night. Night time is ideal to study as there is minimum distraction but make sure you sleep for at least for 6 hours, I personally believe in a power nap in the afternoon as well.

Here are my recommendations.
1. Study in a quiet place away from distractions
2. Make sure not to study on the bed, find yourself a good chair and table
3. Form a timetable and stick it to it. It should not be too relaxed or too tough.
4. Take 10 minutes breaks for each 2 hours of studies
5. Try to avoid stimulants like coffee. Eat an apple instead ( it has properties to help you keep awake).
6. I suggest small treats like your fav show or game for following your timetable and being on target
7. Group studies for difficult topics.
8. Please don't forget blessings of your elders

I hope I was of help, please get back to me with any doubts you have. I used to counsel students regarding studies so I have read a lot about studies and memory

Regards
