Question : Several weeks ago, I had a thyroid ultrasound indicating two nodules and visible lymph nodes. One of the nodules was a TR4 and was recommended for FNA. The FNA is scheduled for this Thursday with a head and neck surgeon.
My original reason for the ultrasound was throat and right sided anterior neck pain in the area of my thyroid. Today, my endocrinologist diagnosed me with sub-acute thyroiditis. This was based on my symptoms, in addition to lab findings of elevated ESR, elevated CRP, low TSH, high TT4, and high FRI.
She suggested that it may we wise to wait on the FNA until the thyroiditis resolved, although she said I could still go forward with it if I wanted. She also mentioned that the nodules may even shrink is the thyroiditis resolves.
She mentioned that the pathology may show some signs of inflammation that may make it less clear. I’m wondering if the FNA would still be capable of ruling out malignancy, even with the background of subacute thyroiditis, or if the test is just going to cause me more anxiety and uncertainty.
I’ve attached a copy of visit notes.

                                    Brief Answer:
FNA can be done.
Detailed Answer:
HI
I have gone through your last query
FNAB of a thyroid nodule can be done even if you have subacute thyroiditis.
The problem can be a slight discomfort during the procedure but the inflammation of the gland will not have a significant impact in the pathology result.
FNAB will determine the exact natyre of the thyroid nodule and rule out possible malignancies.
Hope i have answered to your question.
Take care
