Posted on Tue, 7 Feb 2017
Question: I would like to know what are the newest treatments for osteoarthritis. I fear going to a rheumatologist
because I fear taking prednisone and its derivatives. Thank you, XXXX

This is an addition to my medical hx: 10/11/16 - had left total knee replacement.

Brief Answer:
Many new treatments are available.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have read your query.

Treatment of osteoarthritis depends upon it cause, as osteoarthritis may be due to many causes like osteoporosis which is most common cause of osteoarthritis in people, rheumatoid arthritis, gout etc.

You have already visited the doctor, so I am assuming that you are suffering from age related osteoarthritis, so for you I would like add new drugs which will help you, but one thing is clear that these drugs will help only if you have grade osteoarthritis as above grade 2 we mostly recommend joint replacement if joint is involved.

New drugs which helps you are-

Bisphosphonates, by inhibiting the activity of osteoclasts in the bone beneath the cartilage in affected joints.

Strontium ranelate is a dual-action bone agent, which means it inhibits bone-destroying osteoclasts much like a bisphosphonate while also increasing activity of bone-building cells called osteoblasts.

Other new and important way of treatment are Intra-articular injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), hyaluronic acid viscosupplementation.

These drugs must be taken under supervision of your doctor.

It all depends upon the assessment of joints and bone by your doctor.

I hope you have got your answer.

Thanks,
