Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. No, this surgery does not sustain life long. Once the otosclerosis process involves the inner ear, the patient has to use hearing aids.

2. Even after successful surgery, the patient eventually needs hearing aids. This usually happens after a 15-20 years. Hence there is no immediate cause for worry.

3. Yes, she can travel by air in October.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. This is because successful surgery bypasses the otosclerotic fixation of the stapes bone. It does not stop the disease process.

2. This natural history of the disease is explained to each patient before surgery.

3. There is no known treatment to prevent further damage to the hearing which is expected in future. For active otosclerosis, sodium fluoride tablets are given to slow the progress of the abnormal new bone formation (otospongiosis).

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

What happens later in life?

There are a small number of patients (less than 1%) who have undergone a successful stapedectomy and then experience sudden hearing loss many years after the operation. However, these are very much a minority. There are many people who had stapes operations 35 years ago or more and the vast majority still have useful hearing. It does seem that in some respects the operation halts the course of otosclerosis.

A certain degree of "old age hearing loss" affects everyone eventually and patients with otosclerosis are no different from the rest of the population in this respect. It is usually possible to correct this later loss of hearing with low powered h

Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. This deterioration happens in all patients later in life.

2. The percentage mentioned is of complications in addition to this.

3. The article mentions this in different words, but the meaning is the same.

4. Fluoride supplementation is considered to be useful in early otosclerosis (though the exact mechanism is not known). Once the disease is advanced, this does not help.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.
