Does Smoking Cannabis Interfere With A Dental Procedure?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Jul 2014
Question: Hello, I'm getting my wisdom teeth removed tomorrow. I am a cannabis smoke but I stopped 1 weeks ago. I did not let my doctor know that I am a smoker due to personal reasons but I am very scared of what might happen if my dentist doesn't know. I only smoked for a bout a month, and don't smoke cigarettes at all. What are my risks?

Brief Answer:
Effect of anaesthesia will be low while extraction

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing in.

If you smoke or drink then effect of anaesthesia is reduced & you might experience little more pain while extraction.
Since you have ceased smoking since a week so it might not be a major factor in your case. Your dentist will check for numbness before proceeding for extraction. So needn't worry.
Secondly be careful post extraction.
Do not smoke for 10-15 days till socket heals because smoking inhibits healing & cause poor clotting leading to dry socket which is very painful.
Rest all instructions will be given by your dentist.
Good luck for tommorrow.
Take proper diet before going for extraction.

Hope I answered your query

Wishing you good health
