Posted on Mon, 16 Mar 2015
Question: I had my lfts done and had a few wines prior to the test. (Within an hour). My ggt was 105 but all others were fine. Could the wine have raised it or should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
GGT level is high in alcoholism and cholestasis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear
I have gone through your question.
I can understand your concern.

GGT level is increased in alcoholism.
It can also be increased in cholestasis but in cholestasis ALP level is also high.

You have high GGT only with rest of the liver function tests are normal.

So most probably it is due to alcohol.

No need to worry. Just be relaxed. You should decrease the intake of alcohol.

Repeat the GGT level after a month. It will gradually decrease. If it is persistently high even in absence of alcohol then further investigations are needed.

Right now no treatment or investigations are required. Just reduce your alcohol intake.

Hope I have answered your question, if you have doubt then I will be happy to answer.
