Question : I had cdiff in 2010 and a severe case cant gain weight anymore.. I use to take culturelle probiotic but read that florstor works better. I took one dose of florstor and got excessive gas that smelled putrid and rotten. Is yeast in the florstar causing this?

                                    Brief Answer:
Yes,Most likely.
Detailed Answer:
Hello.Welcome to healthcaremagic.
I am Dr.Senduran,General physician hope to answer your query.
Florastor contains yeast named Saccharomyces boulardi.
This species can induce production of foul smelling gas especially containing hydrogen sulphide in the bowel by fermentation process in some individuals.
As you don't tolerate this probiotic, would advice you to stop consuming this and restart consuming the culturelle probiotic.
Hope I have answered your query. If any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Take care.Wish you good health.

Yes
Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
Thanks for your follow up query.
Yes.But only Persistent moderate to severe c.difficle infection with recurrent gastrointestinal disturbances and with abnormal intestinal environment like mucosal inflammation etc would be associated with reduced absorption of nutrients like amino acids, fat etc.Without enough nutrients, body doesn't gain weight rather lose weight rarely
However in mild infection with c.difficle, this is not the case where weight gain can occur with proper diet..
Hope this answers your query.Take care.

                                    Brief Answer:
Effective management with drugs
Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
Effective management with drugs and few measures to both eradicate the bacteria and to stop phases of acute flares.
Measures to enhance the intestinal function.
1)Avoid using antibiotics excluding drugs indicated for this infection
2) Treatment with oral metronidazole(antibiotic)or oral vancomycin tablets the dose and frequency ,may vary
depending on infection severity.
3)Probiotic supplement consumption.
4)Fecal microbiota transplant---Recent research has shown that administering a healthy person's bowel flora through enema to a patient with c.difficle colitis would be much beneficial. But safety not established..It might be a boon to the patients of c.difficle infection in future
5)Oral Fidaxomicin(Dificid)--a recently approved drug effective against c.difficle and vancomyin injections can be administered in relapse of active infection.
Discuss with your treating doctor about this for considering repeat course of antibiotics
With the above measures, the intestinal absorption of nutrients can improve gradually.
Take care.
Wish you good health.
