Question : Hi,

Early on in my pregnancy, I drank alcohol. About 1-2 glasses of wine almost daily, and on two occasions I had 3 glasses. I found out I was pregnant at 3 weeks 5 days from my LMP and stopped immediately. I told my OB what I did and he said it was not a major concern.

My son is now 3 months. He was born 7 lb 4 oz (I was induced at 37 weeks) and has a head circumference in the 50th percentile. He smiles and has even rolled over already.

Since he was born I have been overcome with guilt, and I am afraid to tell my pediatrician. My son does have a small nose and his philtrum, while there, doesn’t look as pronounced as other infants.

Could I have caused any damage, and should I talk to my pediatrician about this?

Brief Answer:
Not a cause for concern.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Drinking during pregnancy causes the blood alcohol levels to rise and it can diffuse into the blood stream of the fetus. However, you need not worry since you had already stopped by the 4th week of gestation. Had anything gone wrong, it would have been rather gross, something like a missing or malformed organ since that is the time of organogenesis. Since that is not the case, you can rest assured that your past drinking habit has not affected the baby in any manner. The philtrum and nose structure are due to the genetic make up of the baby and you need not get concerned about it. You can feel free to talk to your pediatrician but I do not think that to be of any significance, neither do I think that he would bother about it.

In short, I would insist you to give up your guilt feeling.

Feel free to write back.

Regards

Thanks, he does have one problem — a pelvic kidney. Not sure if that was caused by me or not?

Also, I sent a pic. Two questions on it—

Do you see any facial features of FAS?
Will the photo be kept confidential?

Brief Answer:
Not related. Not a cause for concern.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Pardon me for the inadvertent delay in responding. I do not think that the pelvic kidney has anything to do with this. I have checked the attached image and it does not exhibit features of FAS.

Rest assured that the image (or reports that you might submit) would be kept confidential.

Regards
