Question: Hi Doctor, I have 15 month old twin boys and the elder twin had enterococci meningitis when he was 10 days old. He was on a 14 day antibiotis course and is completely receovered. Last week (when he is running 15 months), he threw a fit and was not conscious for 5-10 minutes and was hospitalised for 2 days and was prescribed frisium tablet (1/2 per dosage - twice a day) for 3 days and advent drops (1.5ml twice a day) for 5 days apart from crocin drops, as he had high fever. He has completely recovered and discharged last week on friday. I wanted to check if Raagi poridge (raagi seeds soaked overnight and ground like a paste, cooked to boil with jaggery and salt added served lukewarm to kids) which they have been having for 8-9 months now can be continued in winters, especially after the seizure episode for my son? Please help clarify asap.

Brief Answer: may be febrile fits Detailed Answer: Hi' Yes,what your son had has bern diagnosed as febrile fits or febrie convulsion.( even though the history of neonatal meningitis is there) I assume that the child is completely alright now You must remember that this febrile fits can recur with high fever. So you have to be careful and bring down his fever with paracetamol syrup and sponging in future. Raging porridge is OK and very good ( contains calcium and iron) You can give him that during normal days . If he gets sick, however give him light food as ragi may be dificult to digest at that time. Good luck God bless Dr Uma

Hi Doctor, his last hospitalisation final impression was viral fever as his CBC, peripheral smear, urine routine and electrolytes reports were all normal. The doctor adviced to ensure his fever does not uptake and give him crocin drops and frisium for 3 days whenever there is a fever repeat. Just was worried if this medication and advent antibiotics should not leave any side effects or sleepiness, memory loss or hyper activeness in him. Please help clarify.

Brief Answer: no Detailed Answer: Hi XXXXX, Yes , The fits was due to high fever and the cause of fever was viral. As I wrote earlier, upto 5-6 years of age you have to be careful when ever fever goes up. As he grows you have to increase the crocin dosage to 10 mgs per kg body weight per dose. Frisium can make him drowsy for a short time. Antibiotics will not affect his brain functions. Do not worry. However antibiotics will be decided by your doctor and do not use by yourself. Viral fevers do not require antibiotics. His prematurity and early meningitis can be the cause of behaviour problems - you should have a regular followup with a good pediatrician to assess his growth and development Dr Uma

Thanks doctor, we have been consulting our pediatrician, who is very good since their birth. His milestones are very similar, sometimes ahead, sometimes behind 15 days or so from my other twin. I dont see any behavioural problems whatsoever in him and he has been very normal and active. We give both of them raagi like i mentioned once a day XXXXXXX milk with lil sugar frequently, rice, dal with vegetables in the night pressure cooked in the night. We also add "Healthy mix - Satthu maavu" 2 sccops in the raagi poridge ground along with 4 badams soaked overnight. When they are cranky and dont take rice, we give them cerelac - stage 3 & 4. What else healthy meal would you recommend to ensure adequate weight gain and sound health. Can i give them egg whites, fish?

Brief Answer: you seem to be giving a good diet Detailed Answer: Hi XXXXX, I am very happy that your premi twins are doing well! Secondly u seem to be giving a good mixture of diet with cereals and vegetables. You can add a fruit in the diet banana XXXXXXX etc. You can try egg initially half boiled and small amount and then gradually increase. Egg is known to cause allergy in many. Fish you can wait for another 6 months or so. Go slow and introduce any new flood one by one with a gap of atleat a week in between. God bless u Dr Uma
