Question : Feeling awkward to ask. I had an unprotected encounter with a SW 30 days back. It was only minnitue or so. I have taken out once i noticed condom was brocken. After 10 days of encounter i had medium fever with difficulties of passing urine and continued urge. Doc gave me 10 days of doxycycline. However i came back home and consulted another doc who gave me augmentin 5 days coarse. Before starting augmetin my platelet count was 258. After 5 days i tested again today and found platelet 176. Rest all parameters of CBC are with range and doest show any infection as per doc. Any clue about low platelet count? I will test for HIV soon. Which test should i opt for?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Here is my advice.

As per your history, unprotected sex with fever, difficulty of passing urine and continuous urge, so this should be evaluated for sexually transmitted diseases. As well as possibility of urinary tract infection should also be excluded.

For that I will suggest you to do urine culture sensitivity, blood test for HIV, syphilis, Hepatitis B and C after physician consultation.

Please let me know do you have discharge or bleeding from penis, rashes or ulcer over private parts, pain or swelling over scrotal area? Kindly follow up with detailed history.

In that case you may also require discharge or ulcer secretions culture sensitivity. Kindly continue medications as advised by physician. He may change antibiotic as per culture sensitivity test report.

Platelet count of 176 is still within normal limit. It usually comes down in infections. So to check the count trend kindly repeat platelet count after 24 hours with physician consultation.
