Question : Five weeks ago I discover a sore on my foreskin. Two weeks later I did a blood test wihich indicates that i had syphilis, (T.pallidum total- serum: positive and RPR (vdrl) - serum: Negative). The doctor treated me with doxycycline (1 capsule 110mg twice a day for 14 days). I waited a week and did again a blood test. The test has the same result. (T.pallidum-serum Positive and RPR (vdrl) negative. Do is still have syphilis? Is it safe to have srx after the treatment?

The test for Treponema pallidum TOTAL is a specific test for syphilis and would stay positive despite treatment unlike the Non- specific VDRL which falls 4 fold every 3 months after adequate treatment. Since doxycycline is one of the drugs of choice for treatment of Syphilis so you can assume that you have been adequately treated and can therefore indulge in sexual activity.
