Question : Five years ago my liver enzymes XXXXXXX to 86. I was taking tylenol for a bad back so I accredited that to that number. I went back for bloodwork, and it went down to 22. Over the next five years its been consistently low. I gained weight, and was up to 200 pounds this past year. I lost 25 pounds. I was taking diet supplements for about 3 months. I recently put on 10 pounds due to covid 19 stay put.I was cooking and eating a lot. Last week I over did the eating. I ate a lot of candy and other carbohydrates.Yesterday I went for my bloodwork. My ALT was 98 and my AST was 44. The dr. thinks it is fatty liver and wants me to get an ultrasound. Could it be anything else? He said not to worry and the ultrasound is just to make sure it is nothing more than fatty liver. What more could it be? Could the supplements I took cause damage? Can the damage be reversed? thanks for any input

Brief Answer:
Elevated liver enzymes are explained below in details.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Based on my daily practice, elevated liver enzymes can be related to these common diagnoses:
-Fatty liver
-Hepatitis
-Using too much medication such as anti inflammatory medications. Some supplements can also elevate the level of the liver enzymes.

So, to answer your queries:
1) Beside fatty liver you should also exclude hepatitis through examinations.
2) The supplements can also be the cause of the liver inflammation and elevation of liver enzymes.
3) Most of the time, elevated liver enzymes are not related to a serious liver problem and can be reversed through proper treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards!

The range of ALP at my lab is 9-122.
My level is 123. So my ALT is 98 and AST is 44. Could this signify anything worse?
