Question : Dear Doctor, my mother aged 50 has chronic knee pain for which she used to meet a orthopaedician and get her medicines once in every few months. This time her doctor has asked her to do some blood and urine tests before prescribing the medicines. In the results, we found some abnormal values in urine routine and lft test. Please review the results. I have attached the same. She also complains of sudden urine sensation in evening and night.

Dear Doctor, She has not taken any MRI or Xray. Right now, the concern is not about her knee pain but some abnormalities marked in the reports that I attached, specially urine routine and liver function test. Please let me know what does it mean to have blood and bacteria marked in her urine analysis. And is her liver normal based on the report? In the next follow up question, I will tell you about the medicines she used previously as she is yet to call me back. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
As detailed.

Detailed Answer:
Urine is showing pus cells and epitherlial cells as well as Red blood cells; pus cells are within normal limits.. These in turn can give proteins in trace quantity and also blood as positive. Protein can show trace even on consumption of more protein in any form like medications or in diet.
This may be indicative of mild urinary infection.
Since Urea and creatinine that is kidney functions are normal hence not to worry.
In such cases it is better to get urine culture and sensitivity tests if already not on antibiotic. And also Ultrasonography of abdomen particularly for urinary system.

Liver functions in the form of bilirubin, enzymes, alkaline phosphatase and GGT are normal hence; The total proteins are marginally raised and since albumin is normal raised globulin might have reflected in raised total proteins. Albumin + Globullin = total proteins.

When such reports are present with marginal raise, it is better to repeat these tests to make sure and after stopping excessive proteins in any form.

I hope this answers you query.
Regards.
