Gall Bladder Attacks, Pain, Has Piles. Want To Know Complications Of Having Surgery With Jaundice, If Detected
Question: Hi, My mother was having Gallstones without any symptoms for around a year now.. The gallstones were diagnosed a year back while doing a thorough routine checkup.. As it did not create any problem till date, she was neglecting this. She was doing all household works and never reported any discomfort. Recently one day back she has started experiencing Gallstone attacks with severe pain, and today the doc asked for some blood tests to diagnose whether she has jaundice as well..
She is having piles. She is 50+.. No heart problems as of now..
Wanted to know about the complications of having a surgery with Jaundice (if detected), and is this overall process fatal by any means.

Let us consider few facts before we come to the final reply.
Gall Stones, if multiple and with an inflammed gallbladder, needs to be removed.
If she has pain, there are chances she has got the gall bladder inflammed by either infection or a stone getting impacted in the neck of the gallbladder.
Do you have a baseline and a fresh ultrasonography done?
The doctor has advised reports of liver functions (Jaundice) as he would be expecting a stone impacted in the common bile duct which leads to obstructive jaundice.
The piles anyway have no relation to this incidence and they can be managed individually.
Usually there is no complication if the jaundice is taken care of before going for gallbladder removal; and that will all depend on the liver function tests.
The surgery if there is jaundice will be a two stage surgery:
First they will need to remove the obstruction via an endoscope and if need be put in a stent in the common bile duct.
The second stage will be after 2 weeks or so and will involve removing the gallbladder by an open or a Laparoscopic surgery.
In either case the surgery is safe in experienced hands.
