Are you able to chew the food well?
Are you able to gulp water well? This is because water does not require muscle of mastication but only swallowing. If you have difficulty gulping water then it is better to check for raised blood pressure, intracranial pressure.
Do you have weakness of arm or leg? Is there deviation of mouth to one side? Are you able to retain air with puffed mouth? If there is weakness or deviation of mouth, it could be initial sign of stroke. It is better to get examined by local GP to look for signs.
Sometimes there is in co-ordination between the muscles of swallowing because of age related degeneration. This is commonly reported by many people over 80 yrs of age. If something is very sweet and spicy the tongue would take it a big chunk without chewing. There is a hurriedness as well.
