Question: Greetings. Yesterday afternoon I developed cramps and gurgling in my lower colon and rectum accompanied by loose stools and then one event of diarrhea. I had to go to the toilet around 10 times that whole day and evening. I tried two Imodium capsules yesterday, and the symptoms improved somewhat. This morning I still have some cramps before moving my bowels but there is no blood or mucus, and the stool is normal color but loose rather than solid, and have gone to the toilet several times this morning with some cramps and gurgling, but not produced large amount of stool (probably because I haven't eaten a large amount of food since yesterday morning). I have no idea what caused this, because my food was usual on Tuesday when the symptoms started. I'd be interested in your comments. I feel some gurgling in my colon right now, but no pain or cramps. I have no fever or stomach discomfort. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Probably gastroenteritis, follow the advice below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The symptoms seem to be related to a gastroenteritis.
I recommend to continue using Imodium in case of diarrhea.
You can use it three times a day.
I also recommend to use daily probiotics.
I suggest to drink liquids and eat solid food frequently.
If the symptoms continue, I suggest to do a stool test and a complete blood count for further evaluation and specific treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards!

Thank you, Dr. Gurabardhi. Would there be any reason that it would arise suddenly? By this afternoon I find the symptoms improving including the cramp and gurgling in my lower colon. It is so mysterious to me.

Brief Answer:
Imodium may have helped in improving the symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the intestine, which usually arise suddenly and go away itself after a few days.
Imodium may have helped in improving the symptoms.
So, I recommend to continue using it as long as you will have the symptoms.

Hope it helps dear.
