Grey Beard Hair, IPL Laser Treatment. Better Laser Technology?

default
Posted on Wed, 23 May 2012
Question: Hi, i am a 33yrs old male with wheatish brown complexion, having thick hair growth in the beard and moustache (facial) area with some grey hair on both the cheeks which i wish to get rid permanently, i tried 4nos sittings of IPL laser treatment in mumbai which did not satisfy me at all as the hair which had seemed to be gone initially, grew back in couple of months without making any difference to the thickness or colour of new hair growth, the intesity of the laser was increased for each sitting and the 4th sitting even burnt my skin due to which i had to take a week off for recovery after which i decided not to take any more sittings, but i still wanna get rid of my facial hair permanently so please suggest me the right laser technology available in mumbai which would give pain free hair free experience for my type of skin, Thanx.

Hi,

Thank you for the query,

Before you go for any laser hair reduction ,you need to understand few things about hair growth in men and about the laser machines used .

Beard hair in men is under the influence of male hormones(testosterone) ,and hence its not easy to remove it.That is because we are not reducing the male hormone in the body by any means (and which we cannot do also).
Even if you get an initial improvement ,the hormones would stimulate it again.

Secondly ,you also need to understand the machine you are getting it done from.
There are three different machines used for hair reduction(not removal ).
1) IPL ( intense pulse light)
2) Nd:yag laser
3) Diode laser.

Unfortunately ,of the three ,IPL is the worst .It is not even considered as a laser .Its a light devise meant for various purpose including hair reduction. But it does not show any good response.Since it is a very cheap machine ,lot of doctors keep it in their clinic. It has more tendencies to cause burn marks also ( as in your case).

Nd:yag & Diode are both considered as good lasers, but of the two Diode is considered as more superior.Diode laser is more costly and hence is not easy to find one ,but there are few clinic which have this laser too. With no doubts ,I would recommend diode to any body.

Another important fact about lasers is that it does not work on very fine hair and on grey hair. You mentioned that you have few grey hair ,I hope that your doctor would have advised you about it before hand .But yes laser hair reduction does require multiple sittings which may vary from patient to patient (6 to 10 sittings even with diode ) .

Unlike the face (in males) ,body hair show good response to laser .With my experience I would say that even 6 sessions would be good enough.

Please do understand that the term is reduction and not removal ( even though we see hair being removed too in certain cases ).

I would like to advise you that ,please don't take a laser treatment form a beauty parlor .You need a experienced dermatologist for this .In the end I would say that its not just the machine ,but the man behind the machine which is also very important.

I am glad that I could share this with you as these things are not known by many people ( not even doctors) .

I hope this answers your query, and now you can decide which laser to go for ( if at all). If you have any further questions ,you can write back to us.

Hi,

Thank you for the follow up,

The technology you are talking about -microlyisis & thermolysis are out dated one. They were in practice before lasers came in to practice and now a days they are especially used only for those who have grey hair. There are other disadvantages to it.They are painful, time consuming and can lead to pitted scars .And if at all they are to give any permanent result its because of its tendency to cause scaring.I would not recommend you the centers you mentioned. You can go for thermolysis for grey hair if needed.

I would recommend a diode laser for the black hair(if you are sure that you want to go for it in-spite of the variable results).

In-fact there are lot of places in Mumbai where diode is used , especially by dermatologist ,you just have to hunt for it.
Well the cost of the procedure by a diode would only be slightly higher than the IPL.

I hope this answers your query .

Wish you good health.

Hi!,
Thanks for the query,

Yes coolglide(cutera) is relatively a good machine ,in fact its a Nd:yag laser ,but its not painless at all. It is there in mumbai also ,but if you are looking for a painless technology and that too with a diode ,then I would suggest you the latest technology called suprano XL.This in not only a diode laser but also painless. There are very few machines in India ,because its a costly machine . I would strongly suggest you this.

As far as cost is concerned ,if you get it done from any chain of laser clinic ,then they may not consider any discounts .In stead you should talk to any dermatologist for the favor. I know lot of dermatologist in Mumbai who are doing lasers ,but the suprano XL you would get only with Dr.Apratim Goel. You can contact her on phone (0000) and discuss your case. You can give her my reference if needed(esp for the cost) .I am sure she would help you in that.
Regarding grey hair ,I am not very sure who would be having thermolysis or electolysis ,but you can talk to her for the same as well. Do convey my regards to her when you XXXXXXX her. Thermolyisis or electrolysis is a simple procedure and any body having the machine can do a good job.
And do let me know if you have any further questions or doubts.

wish you good health.

hi, with reference to your previous replies to my queries i had called dr goel and discussed about painless/permanent facial(beard/moustache) hair removal for myself when she had qouted me the normal rates of 8k per single sitting & 36k for a package of 6 sittings & a package deal for full body hair removal for 1lac, and when i gave her your reference & asked her for discounts, she said she will decide when i XXXXXXX her personally, after few days when i took the apointment and decided to go for the treatment & XXXXXXX her personally, she was outstationed and not reachable hence i had to discuss everything with her subordinates who in return had a word with dr goel about my case, when she replied that she does not remember me calling her or given reference from you and simply refused to consider me for any discounts, being a layman and not a celebrity/model i kindly request you to speak to her to consider me for discounts, as i am very much in need for the treatment, and being a hairy person i eventually would like to get rid of it completely and looking forward for a full body hair removal in future as well, if everything goes well on the 1st sitting or get the desired results without any side effects.
hope you will do the needfull. my contact details are - YYYY@YYYY / 0000.
Thankyou.

Hi! XXXXXXX

Good to hear from you after a long time.

The rates which Dr.Goel has quoted are what is going on at most of the places in India. But apart from the cost I would like to discuss one more thing with you and that is the number of sessions. "In males who have thick beard or body hair, 6 sessions won't be enough. One would at-least require 12 sessions depending upon the thickness of hair".

As far as full body is concerned, as to how many sessions Dr.Goel is offering you at 1 lac costing?

I can talk to her regarding the discount, but then I cannot force her for anything.

In-fact I can suggest you another dermatologist who is doing good in mumbai regarding all the cosmetic procedures and has a Diode laser too. He is "Dr XXXXXXX Shetty" and his contact number is 0000. Kindly talk to him giving my reference and discuss with him in detail about your financial problem. I am sure he would find a way out to help you. Its also important to discuss and bargain on number of sessions as we know very well that it would require multiple sessions.

I truly understand your problem and wish that you get a good deal too.

In case you need any further help kindly write back to me. If needed I can talk to Dr. XXXXXXX regarding the same.

I would advise you to contact Dr XXXXXXX first and then let me know about the conversation.

Wish you good health,

Regards,
Dr.Bharat chawda

ok i spoke to dr XXXXXXX XXXXXXX and after the conversatition i found he uses cutera diode laser for hair removal treatment which once when i asked u about it, u said its not painless at all and then u refered me to dr goel who uses soprano laser for painless hair removal, now again i am confused as to what is painless or which treatment is more effective and suits my pocket as well.

Hi! XXXXXXX

Thanks for writing back,

I've worked 12 years only on Diode laser for hair reduction ,and I've found it to be the best both in males & females.I've not used soprano diode ,but have heard from the distributer that it is painless .
It would be difficult for me to compare between both of them as far as pain is concerned. Since I've no personal experience of using it.Since it is a diode I consider it be a good laser.

As far as I know Dr XXXXXXX has Light sheer Diode and not cutera Diode(please confirm it by calling him again).

Soprano is relatively new in the market ,but light sheer Diode is there for a long time and has a very good reputation.Soprano has yet to prove itself as fas as effectiveness is concerned ,which one can only talk when one has used it more than couple of years.

I've myself used Light sheer diode on males and have not found it to be unbearable.
You should more go with the the laser which gives you better result and the doctor who gives you more sessions and is ready to compromise on the monetary part of it(since we know that you would require multiple sessions).

I would advice you to compare it yourself by talking to both the doctors ,and also talk about the discount and number of sessions they are offering.I think this would be more important than the pain part.
But if pain is the only concern in your case ,then I would suggest you to go for soprano.

If you read any medical literature ,there won't be any comment of which laser is best or worst .It is just by personal experience that one can talk about it.

As I always say: "its not just the machine but the man behind the machine which is also important".
I've talked to both the doctors about you (and also about the discount) ,now I'll leave it to you whom to got for.

What I gathered from talking to both of them ,was that Dr XXXXXXX was more ready to offer you discount and help you out .Since I've good reputation with both of them, kindly don't let them know that you have talked to both the doctors.

I hope this would help you decide which laser to go for & I wish that you get good results.

In case you need any further help ,kindly write back to me.

regards,
Dr.Bharat Chawda
