Question: HI, I have genetic neuropathy in my feet which has spread to just above the knee. During the day it causes partial numbness. I bike and or kayak pretty hard nearly every day and lately have been getting cramps in legs - I get up and drink some water and this helps - but I think I keep hydrated during the day. 1) is this related to the neuropathy? 2) is there anything I can do to help prevent the cramping 3) is there anything I can do to stop the spreading of neuropathy? thanks

Brief Answer:
I would explain as follows.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.

I have read your query.

1) It is very likely that the legs cramps are linked to the neuropathy, besides staying well hydrated, you should not overuse the muscles of the legs.

2) Besides avoiding overuse, Magnesium supplements may help in the reduction of cramps.

3) Hereditary neuropathies can't be cured or prevented, the progression may be slowed down by following a healthy lifestyle and diet, exercising, avoiding potential worsening factors such as alcohol, smoke, etc.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Feel free to ask if you have further questions.

So is reducing exercise just to prevent cramps or for other reasons as well?
