Question: My niece had a lap appendectomy, uncomplicated, 2 months ago. she has chronic LLQ pain, which worsens with activity...I.e. Bike riding. She cannot work at her job as a mate on a sailboat, as she is unable to raise sails. She has always been a tough sports playing gal. She is 23 years old. her surgeon doesn't know what the pain is. She is asking me for help, as I am an RN. Any suggestions?

Hello,
Thanks for the query.
There can be various causes for chronic left lower quadrant pain of abdomen.
These causes may be related to her gastro intestinal tract such as
Diverticulitis
Inflammatory bowel conditions like ulcerative colitis or crohns' s disease
Lactose intolerance
Chronic constipation

There may be involvement of Urinary tract as in...
Kidney stones
Urinary tract infection

There may be involvement of reproductive organs as in..
Ovarian cyst
Endometriosis
Pelvic inflammatory disease

It could be even abdominal wall hernia.

I have given you a very detailed list of possible causes for such pain.
In case she is having some associated symptom suggesting a digestive tract involvement, then consult a gastroenterologist first and then proceed to consult a Gynecologist for proper evaluation.
You may consult a general surgeon at the end.

I hope it helps however you may revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
