Question : I am 62 years old and had sexual intercourse on Friday afternoon. (we are new at this, just a couple of weeks,) and have had slight bleeding and swollen vulva and slight pain since. Please help.
Brief Answer:
Trauma or infection
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX at the age of 62 there is a deficiency of hormones in the body, namely estrogen, which is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the vaginal muscles.
Due to lack of estrogen, the vagina becomes friable and dry. Since you had intercourse after a long time, any minor trauma can cause damage. Another possibility is infection or ulcers causing the bleeding. I would suggest that you see your doctor and get examined. Any possibility of trauma needs to be identified. Get a pap smear to rule out cervical dysplasia. Once the cause is determined, treatment is simple. Avoid sex for now. Keep the area clean. Wash with betadine solution.
