Hello,
Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your query.
You have now given a fair amount of details and I have gone through your question in detail.
Sleep disturbance is very common in fibromyalgia and fibromyalgia is not exactly depression. Infact in fibromyalgia patients, depression has to be ruled out and treated accordingly. If you dont need medications then you can enroll yourself for 4-5 weekly sessions of cognitive behavioural therapy.
Also try following the below mentioned measures for sleep hygiene.
1) Stop all caffeine until the problem gets solved.
2) Start regular morning exercise.
3) Take a warm water bath before going to sleep.
4) Keep the sleeping and waking hours regular. Even if you sleep late, wake up on the predetermined time, even if it is only 2-3 hours sleep. That way you will be able to go to sleep early the next day. This will take time.
5) Use the sleep area exclusively for sleeping and not for any other purpose. Shift all your work like surfing, internet browsing and eating away from the sleep area and let the sleep area be exclusively meant for sleep.
6) Keep the lighting dim and cozy.
7) Don't try very hard to sleep. In case if you are not getting sleep, you should sit up and do some reading and got bed only if he is sleepy again.
trying too hard to sleep will not help you.

Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for me, so that I get a good feedback.

well I have antidepressants in the past and because of their side effects I stopped and I don't want to try another one. however I had subacute thyroiditis 2 years ago and my family doctor used to think that my thyroid will get hypoactive in the future but because it's been stable for 2 years now he no longer thinks so. indeed he thinks that my depression will go away. I hope he's right. but i'm having a hard time correcting my sleep ( I sleep late and wake up late). do you think he's right? I also have fibromyalgia as I said earlier.

Hello,
Yes, he is right about the hypothyroidism. You can still check for your TSH levels every 6 months and identify if you develop hypothyroidism anytime. Regarding Fibromyalgia and depression, you should use medications. There are plenty of different types of medications and if you have had side-effects with one of them, you may not have side-effect with all rest of them.
But still its an individual preference and you can avoid using medications and try for non medication interventions before.(As stated earlier)
Thanks and regards,

Hello,
Thyroid disorders may lead to depression.
However thyroid disorders are only one of the long list of causes of depression.
Its mostly may not be related to your thyroid disorders.
Atleast fibromyalgia will not be related to thyroid disorders.
Hence you should take medications for depression.

my blood type is O+ and I've been told that people with the O blood type are more prone to depression and thyroid issues. now that my thyroid is balancing out my doctor thinks that my depression will go away too. my depression lead to my thyroid problem.

Answered by Dr. Srikanth Reddy (4 hours later)
Hello,
Research says that those of O blood group have more chances of depression and thyroid disorders, but then being O blood group is not causative. Moreover, a lot many people with O blood group may not have these illnesses.
On the other hand many people who are not O blood group also have thyroid disorders and depression.
The statement "my depression lead to my thyroid problem" is totally wrong. If you physician has said so, then he is probably deficient in his psychiatric knowledge and needs to update it.
Some times thyroid disorders may cause depression, but then it is not always and both can exist as independent illnesses. Sometimes, even if it related, after thyroid becomes normal, still one needs treatment for depression, either psychotherapy or pharmacotherapy.
Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.

i know i had a viral infection that caused the subacute thyroiditis but i believe depression was the major cause of it. i developed an enlarged goiter 7 years and then subacute thyroiditis 2 years ago but my thyroid has been stable for the past 2 years. i know having an O+ blood type is not causative of depression but i believe that people who are of O blood type have more chances of developing depression and thyroid issues because they have dietary allergies like gluten allergy and they're not on the right diet for their blood type. right?
gotta be honest so far seeing a psychiatrist hasn't helped me at al. the medications that they put me on didn't work (had side effects) and then they judged me based on my appearance. and they always questioned how my sister (my only sibling) is doing cause they wanted to know why i'm the way i am and once i told them that she's doing fine they started mis treating me. none of them ever wondered what my blood type is. It's O+ but my sister's is AB+ and my parents are B+ and A+ so I've received their recessive gene which is possible but rare and then i have heard that people with O blood type are more prone to developing depression. i feeling much better before i started seeing psychiatrists, i wish i never had.

Hello,
I understand that you have not had good time with your psychiatrist, but then all psychiatrists are not the same.
I repeat again that "Depression will never cause thyroiditis"
Regarding most of the illnesses, be it peptic ulcer , cancer, infertility, personality disorders, thyroid , depression, schizophrenia, etc have been studied for blood group specificity and they have shown some relationship to exist. But among the hierarchy of the causes, the blood group prototype is the least significant and while treating depression, nobody would bother about the blood group.
What I mean to say is, when a patient of depression comes, at the XXXXXXX I may ask him to get a thyroid profile but never the blood group.
Irrespective of the blood group, you can have depression and your depression will be treated with various therapies NOT depending on which blood group you are. So if you are not diagnosed based on yoru blood group and even treatment doesnt change, then why so much fuss on BLOOD GROUP.
If medications have not helped you then you can consider interpersonal therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, are some good options for you.
thanks and regards,
Dr. Srikanth Reddy

well I tried cognitive behavioural therapy but the problem was that I had to go down to the hospital everyday for a few hours and it wasn't working, it was too hard on me physically and my coughs were getting worse and worse so I stopped. anyways I wanna try the book called "eat right for your type, the complete blood type encyclopedia". I believe that my blood type is playing a major role in my depression. i'm the only one with the o blood type in our family, my sister's is AB+, my mom's is B+ and my father's is A+ and i'm more depressed than all of them. my dog is the reason that I now want to the try the blood type diet. I have a puppy and he's my first dog. research has shown the dogs increase lifespan. I've known of the blood type diet for atleast 10 years but never bothered trying it untill now. my dog is the reason that I wanna try it and i'm sure that i'll recover a lot if I do try the blood type diet.
i do not believe in the kind of therapy that psychiatrists and psychotherapists give. in my case psychiatrists that I've seen recommended that i move out of my parents house because i'm more depressed than anyone else in our family (my sister, my mom and my dad) and none of us agree with my psychiatrists on this. what if i move out and something bad happens to me like what if i get raped or something? and these psychiatrists that I've seen all recommend divorce to their married patients with marital problems and we don't agree with them on this either.
i'm going to try the blood type diet. my dog is the reason that i wanna try the blood type diet. i know that owning a dog increases lifespan according to research studies. I've known of the blood type diet for atleast 10 years and never thought of trying it till now. our puppy is 11 months old and we've had him for about 9 months and he's the reason that i want to try the blood type diet. i bought book on it yesterday called "EAT RIGHT FOR YOUR TYPE, complete Blood Type Encyclopedia" and i'm going to read it. and we're planning to get another puppy in a few months (a companion for our current puppy). if the therapies that you've mentioned are right for me then my dogs will indirectly lead me into it the way my current one is leading towards reading trying the blood type diet.

Hello,
People do benefit from using dogs. Its a nice idea. I am skeptical about the blood group specified diet, but yes, if you are so confident then you should give it a try.
I would like to wish you speedy recovery.
If you need any specific clarification or details, I would be more than happy to help you.

well do you know Dr. XXXXXXX Amen? he's a psychiatrist practicing in the state. he's very famous. in his book he has mentioned that he tried the blood type diet on one of his patients cause the patient wanted to join the American military and the American military no longer accepts people on Ritalin so Dr. Amen took that patient of his off Ritalin and put him on a high carbohydrate diet (which is the diet recommended for the O blood group in the book called Eat Right For Your Type, Complete blood type encyclopedia) on him as far as I remember and the patient felt no different and joined the military. and then I met a men about 10 years ago and his blood type was O+ like mine and he said he had been on the blood type diet for years and it had been working perfectly fine for him and he introduced to the book called "Eat right for your type..." but as I said before at the time I didn't try it, but i'm gonna try it now. this book I not just about diets, it's about lifestyle too. for example in recommends a high protein low carbohydrate diet for the O blood type group but also an intense aerobic exercise few times a week or something like that. anyways i'm gonna read it, I think I might have to obtain some of the guidelines of incorporating this book into my life from Dr.D'Adamo's website. it kinda says this at the beginning of the book ( I read a bit of it last night). so i'm gonna read it and follow its instructions.

Hello,
There are many systems of medicine and of them allopathy (Modern medical sciences) is the most popular. But we never say that other system of medicines such as ayurveda, homeopathy, chirapractice, accupuncture, naturopathy and many others are not effective. The only problem with such therapies is that, other than the incidental individual case reports, they are not studied rigorously with standard randomized controlled trials. They may be working, but have not proved themselves by proper clinical ways.
Nothing wrong in following the diet and lifestyle , cause both the stuff (high protein and low carb diet, and aerobic exercises) are good irrespective of which blood group you are.
Are you planning to have some individual therapy sessions with the "eat right for your type " people?
I will be sincere in admitting that I dont know if they are having such individual case-wise solutions. But may be you can find out, if finances are not an issue.
Wishing you good health (and luck)

I have never heard of the "eat right for your type people" as I said there are guidelines for following the eat right for your type diet in the book called "eat right for your type..." I know it also recommends intense aerobic exercise for the O blood group. and there are instructions for that too either in the book or on the author's site. I know I have to obtain some of the guidlines from Dr. D'Adamo's site. anyways i'm going to read them and follow it. as I said I met someone years ago whose blood type was O+ and he said that he had been following the instructions in this book for years and it was working fine for him.

I also know that research has proven that children who have a pet have stronger immune systems than children who don't. I never had a pet as a child. i'm 29 and my puppy is my first dog and he's 11 months old. we got him when he was 2 months old. so maybe this is why. maybe children who own a pet end up going on the right diet because of their dog. anyways please answer back so that I can close this discussion here. i'm going to contact you through the url that you gave me so that I could let you know how the blood type diet and exercise regimen is working for me. thanks bye.
