Angiomyolipomas of the kidneys are Kidney tumors made of Fat and smooth muscle. It occurs in 13 per 0000 adults, and involes both kidneys in 15% of these patients.

Angiomyolipomas are much more prevalent in patients with tuberous sclerosis, 50-80%, accompanied by cysts and occasionally by renal cell carcinoma. Tuberous sclerosis is a multisystem syndrome characterized by neurological symptoms and tumours in multiple organs including kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, heart and lungs.

These tumors can be classified as small (< 4 cm), medium (4-8 cm) or large (> 8 cm). Renal angiomyolipoma of less than 4 cm is generally asymptomatic. Angiomyolipomas greater than 8 cm, responsible for significant morbidity, require generally a treatment, prior to the development of symptoms and potential complications. The large ones are more common in women than in men, and their rapid growth during pregnancy suggest that hormones may be responsible in
stimulating the increasing size of angiomyolipoma.


The management approach of angiomyolipomas is surgical resection, which should be aimed at parenchyma preservation. This can be effectively accomplished
by limited surgery, without postoperative dysfunction or required dialysis, even in solitary kidney. Renal embolization is alternative to surgery, mainly in patients with poorly functioning kidneys who present with pain or bleeding.

So there is no CURE as this is a tumor. You have to remove the kidney with large tumor. The small one you can wait and follow up with subsequent scans.
