default
Posted on Mon, 22 Jul 2013
Question: I always having pain in my left leg only. Few month ago, I visited to doctor and he told me that due to tight muscles this is happening to only your left side leg.

Due to this in my left side leg, I feel much problem as give below:

1. My left side leg gets much pain compare to my right side leg.
2. When I walk on road, my left side leg keep slight cross compare to right side leg. (e.g. when I walk, my left side leg position is \ and my right side leg position is | )
3. When I do any physical exercise, my left side leg getting pain every time even after short exercise.
4. I feel much heaviness on my left side leg when I keep walking on road, and I tired much fast.
5. I feel much confortable when I keep my left side leg cross while walking (e.g. like this position \ ), but still it keep paining. And I don't want to walk by keeping left side leg in cross position.

Would anybody please tell me that- is this just because of muscle tightness on my left leg OR this is another problem with my left leg.
I want to get relief from this and want my left side leg health as my right side leg.

Thanks!

Hi

Thanks for writing.

Before I answer your query, I need some more information on your problem. Please respond in a bit elaborate way on the following points -
* Since how long have you been noticing this problem of having pain and outward deviation of the leg
* Extent of pain - is it present in the whole leg or present only in a part? is it coming in the front portion or back portion of limb? either in the thigh or below the knee?
* Nature of pain - dull aching ? sensation of pin and needles? stabbing type? or any other sensation
* Do you have the pain in the leg even at rest? or only while doing activities?
* Do you mean to say that you are having pain even in the right leg also ?(as you have stated in point no 1 that your left legs gives more pain than right)

I don't think your problem is due to muscle tightness, it could be something else. So answer all the questions and provide anymore extra information if you have.

Good day

Q* Since how long have you been noticing this problem of having pain and outward deviation of the leg

Answer:
Well, I have this problem since last almost 4 years. And few months ago I visited to Orthopaedic doctor and as per his suggestion, it is muscle tight issue.

Q* Extent of pain - is it present in the whole leg or present only in a part? is it coming in the front portion or back portion of limb? either in the thigh or below the knee?

Answer:
The pain is present in (What I am feeling is) in the center of the leg. Which means that, at the front side in/at the knee area. Sometime I observed between knee and ankle.

Q* Nature of pain - dull aching ? sensation of pin and needles? stabbing type? or any other sensation

Answer:
The pain is more on dull aching. It is NOT kind of pin or needles pain. I always feels that my left leg is heavy. Even when I am walking on the road, my left leg is moving front and back BUT almost in TIGHT position, NOT flexible moving. Left leg moving like TIGHT moving.

Q* Do you have the pain in the leg even at rest? or only while doing activities?

Answer:
Really nice question.
Well, while in the rest, pain becomes low. BUT, the thing I am observing daily while sleeping is- While sleeping, when I keep both the legs streight but in loose mode, then my right foot keeps at almost straight position, BUT my LEFT foot goes down to 100% left side.
(E.g. While sleeping, when I keep both the legs straight but loose position, then- Left foot position: _ and Right foot position: / )
(I wrote 'foot' which means that a portion between ankle and foot thumb)

Q* Do you mean to say that you are having pain even in the right leg also? (as you have stated in point no 1 that your left legs gives more pain than right)

Answer:
NO, I NEVER feel same problem in my right leg.

Thanks very much sir. I would appreciate the way you replied with your questions, and I hope these answers would help you to diagnosis problem in more detail.

Thanks very much.

Have a nice day.

Hi MR XXXXXXX I would appreciate your answers for all the questions. Well, all your symptoms are not pointing to one diagnosis and in my opinion could be due to any one of the two below mentioned entities -
(1) A problem in the HIP joint - Your symptoms which favouring this are
*Outward deviation of the foot while walking which could be due to change in the femoral neck anteversion (upper part of the thigh bone joining the pelvic bone at a different angle leading to a change in the axis of leg)
* It usually presents with dull aching pain, especially in the front of thigh upto knee

(2) A problem in the Lumbar spine (Propably Lumbar canal stenosis-means narrowing of the spinal canal in which the spinal cord is present leading to compression). The symptoms that favour this problem
* Feeling of heaviness the leg especially after any physical activity
* Tightness and crampy like pain in the muscles specifically the calf muscles just below the knee joint
* Dull aching pain all along the leg

I suggest you to get good "digital xray" films for both your hip joints and compare one side with the other. If these xrays wont show up any problem, then an MRI scan of the Hip joint -Left side is needed.
And to diagnose a spinal cord problem in the Lumbar spine - MRI scan is mandatory.

So, a detailed clinical evaluation as well as investigative procedures are necessary to pin point your diagnosis by a competent orthopedic surgeon.

Hope i have addressed all your issues. Happy to help if you need any more clarifications. Regards
