Having Pain In Chest, Uneasiness After Having Alcohol. Anxiety Or Food Allergies?

default
Posted on Thu, 4 Apr 2013
Question: Hello and thank you for your time. I have a question about anxiety. Certain things seem to severely agitate my nervous system (fight flight mechanism) and I am not sure why. The results are severe uncontrolled anxiety. It is mostly physical, but then sometimes becomes mental as I start to react to by bodies physical symptoms. The symptoms are racing of my heart, pain in my chest, overall uneasiness, and over active fight or flight mechanism (a loud noise sends my heart racing.)
The things that can cause it are work out supplements, caffeine (coffee), sleep aids, and alcohol. The worst thing for me by far is binge drinking.
Binge drinking for just one night will give me issues for as long as a week. Its also strange because I have been binge drinking for a while now and the issue has never gotten this severe. I understand the consequences and problems of binge drinking. But, I was wondering why the other things are giving me issues, and why the binge drinking is now so severe. Is it possible there is another issue.
As a bit of an overview: I am a 26 year old male. I am very pysically fit and otherwise healthy. I was just recently diagnosed with a lot of food allergies (wheat, corn, soy, and peanuts, to name a few). I am not sure if this also may mean I have leaky gut or something else, or if the allergies have nothing to do with it all.
Any help would be great and I really appreciate your time.

Hello,
Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your query.
I went through your description in detail and I would appreciate if you can provide me a few more details which can help me in understanding you in a much better way.
1) Do you get this panic like spells without any reason reason as well. Like when you have not ingested these above mentioned things.
2) Are you mostly an anxious type of personality?
3) Have you ever tried stopping alcohol, coffee, supplements? If yes what was the response?
4) Are you on any drugs/medications?
Do reply when ever you find time.

Thanks for the response.
So I am not to the point where I have full blown panic attacks, nor do I have issues of extreme anxiety when I have not ingested the mentioned things above.
2.) I am definitely and anxious person, but usually I can manage it. I am a perfectionist and as a result worry a lot... it is something i am trying to take care of. With that being said it is extremely manageable when I havent ingested the things above. I think I have a small aspect of social anxiety, but nothing major.
3.) I have tried stopping both alcohol and coffee and do both in moderation. The results were positive.
4. I do not take any drugs or medications.

I know some doctors do not believe in this, but I think I may have adrenal Fatigue/ burnout. I have been taking pre workout supplements, coffee, and binge drinking so long that I feel I may have stretched my adrenals to the core... does this sound possible to you? I also have an extremely stressful job (in the Army and about to go to Afghanistan), get limited sleep, and am an anxious person to begin with. I think I may have just stressed my adrenals to the limit.

Anyways, do you see any solutions to these problems, and if so are there any supplements you would recommend to help my adrenals.

thanks again for everything!

Hello,
Thanks for your clarifications.
Unfortunately as you have said, like most of the other doctors you have met, I would likewise disagree to the concept of adrenal burn-out.
After going through both your writings in details, it appears that you have a sub-clinical anxiety disorder. The symptoms of panic do not appear in general and are mostly controllable until you take one of the substances which are either stimulant or modify your GABA balance. The best thing would be to reduce your alcohol, coffee and sleep aids to almost negligible as they are not very essential for living. Second thing you should focus on is a regular exercise pattern as a part of behavioral activation therapy. A workout for 45 min in a day should do a lot of good by releasing endorphins in your body. There after 6-8 sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy with an experienced psychiatrist will help you a long way. If there problems are still persistent then you should try taking anti-anxiety drugs like paroxetine, venlafaxine or fluoxetine. None of these drugs are OTC drugs and you will have to visit your physician/psychiatrist to talk to him/her.
Hope I am able to solve your concerns.
If you have any further queries I will be happy to deal with them.
If not you can close the discussion and rate the answer accordingly.
Kind regards,
