Question : Hello - I went to the emergency room of the Mtl. Heart Institute on Thursday morning since I had a dull ache in chest. They admitted me right away and on Friday, after a Mibi test and Troponins of 37, they performed an angio-plasty of two heart arteries. The heart muscle was NOT damaged and I was released today.

I was given additional medication to take and I will be followed up. Dr. Sharka was RIGHT. But I am glad that all is good now. I did not have a heart attack, only moderate angina...

I just wanted to thank all of you. Is there anything else I should be concerned about?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome back to Ask a Doctor service!

I am glad to hear that everything is finally clear and you are safe now!

I would just recommend following a healthy lifestyle (regular physical activity, a healthy diet, Mediterranean diet is recommendable, and low fat and salt intake in your diet).

I would also recommend you to closely monitor your blood pressure values and periodically check up your blood lipid profile, in order to treat dyslipidemia if present in the future.

It is also necessary avoiding alcohol intake and smoking contacts.

As you have undergone coronary artery angioplasty, taking anti-platelet agents is very important in order to prevent the coronary arteries from blockage in the future.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Yes, thank you. I take anti-platelet agents. I am monitoring my blood pressure and they gave me several new pills: increased my Amlodipine by 2.5 mg; Brilinta 90 mg/diem; Aspirin - 2 baby aspirins per day, 1 morning and night; 2.5 mg of bisoprolol per day and have increased my Crestor to 40 md/diem.

I do not smoke and have not for 5 years, I do not drink. I do take nicotine replacement therapy products, my blood lipid profile is optimal = 1.28 mmol or 49 mgL for LDL; 2.6 for total cholesterol and 2.5 for total chol./HDL ratio which also is optimal.

We have been following Mediterranean diet for 5 years now, but previous to this I smoked a lot and did not eat well...so the plaque build-up was probably from that.
Can I still take my vitamins?

So, I am safe now? The doctor said my heart was very strong and the muscle was not damaged...Now, I have to have PTA done, and other follow-ups. I will be OK, don't you think?
Anything else to add? Vitamins?

Brief Answer:
Everything is going to be OK.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

Thank you for the additional information!

I totally agree with your therapy. It is Ok to take your vitamins as well.

In my opinion everything is going to be OK, as your heart muscle is not damaged, the blood flow in the coronary artery has been restored and you are going to follow a healthy lifestyle.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask me again!

Wishing all the best,

Dr. Iliri
