Brief Answer:
TPHA AND VDRL POSITIVITY

Detailed Answer:
Hi...
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX

I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.

VDRL and TPHA are good primary screening tests for syphilis at all stages (primary, secondary, tertiary, latent or neuro syphilis).

Venereal disease research laboratory (VDRL) test and TPHA (Treponema pallidum haemagglutination test) detect if a person has been infected with the bacteria Treponema pallidum which cause syphilis.

They detect the antigen and antibodies against that antigen,in the blood sample.

Patient may require further confirmation tests of body fluids and CSF examination (very likely in your friend's case)

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease which may be asymptomatic or may present as symptoms like rash, genital sores, oral sores, muscle pain, sore throat, fever, swollen lymph nodes, headache, giddiness, weight loss, fatigue etc.

Please visit a clinician who would go for further evaluation and investigations.
If the diagnosis is established, your friend may need
a single intramuscular injection of long acting Benzathine penicillin G which cures a patient with primary, secondary or early latent syphilis.
Unfortunately the sequel of syphilis are not reversible.

Time being he should abstain from sex(unsafe sex specifically),maintain monogamy and use a barrier device(condom).
He should maintain a good hygiene.
Keep himself well hydrated and abstain from drugs and alcohol.

Hope that I have answered your Query.
Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.

Brief Answer:
TPHA/VDRL POSITIVITY

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

Syphilis is a bacterial infection which is usually spread by sexual contact (may be oral, vaginal or anal).
The only other way of it's transmission is through infected blood transfusion (and vertical transmission from pregnant mother to her fetus).
The transfusion history of your friend might be significant.

Yes.....It is a matter of real concern and should be addressed immediately.
Late stages of syphilis may damage vital organs of body.
Complications include dementia, stroke, paralysis, numbness, blindness, pathological fractures of bone, skin lesions, heart attack and even death.
Unfortunately, the complications of syphilis are not reversible and they can only be prevented by early treatment.

It would be possible to tell the time required for recovery, only after knowing the staging and prevalence of disease.
Your clinician would be in a better position to tell that (after complete evaluation).

Regards.
