Hello, I Accidentally Took Two Birth Control Pills In One

Question: Hello, I accidentally took two birth control pills in one day (microgestin). That was last week Monday. I continued taking the pills everyday as normal and did not skip a day, but since last week Tuesday I have been getting debilitating heart burn. Is the heart burn connected to taking the two pills in one day by accident? Should I skip a day to get back on track? The receptionist at my doctor's office said to skip a day, but I didn't listen to her because I read an article online that said never to skip a day of birth control pills. I started taking Prilosec for my heartburn because it got so bad. Please help.

Brief Answer:
You should not skip a pill, just continue the pills daily at the same time

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask a Doctor service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern.
Taking two contraception pills by accident in one day is not dangerous and generally does not cause any symptoms in the majority of patients.
In a few cases, nausea may happen but this lasts only for that day.
Please do not skip a day, this is never recommended. You may find it difficult to line up the days on your pack (Monday. Tuesday, ect), please be cautious to not be confused again and confuse which pill to get and when.

So, to conclude:
1. it is unlikely the heartburn is due to the pill, in a few cases, nausea may happen and this lasts only for that day
2. do not skip a day of pills
3. watch to not be confused due to the shift of the days, just make sure you continue the pills in order and one a day at the same time as you always take them
4. you may continue prilosec for the heartbutn

I hope this answers your query and is helpful to you. I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj
