Brief Answer:
Usually from dehydration

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. There are indeed many diseases that can cause an elevated albumin and total protein, including blood cancers such as multiple myeloma, as well as infections such as hepatitis and HIV. So obviously it is understandable to be concerned when you get these results back. However, I have seen these results several times in the patients I've seen, and in every case it has been from dehydration. Dehydration is the most common cause of having elevated albumin and total protein, especially if you're not having any other symptoms, and so would be the most likely cause in your case. The next step would be to get retested, and making sure that you are well hydrated before the test. If your total protein was still elevated at that point, then further work-up would be needed to determine a cause, but if it was normal, no other testing would be necessary.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
