Question: Hello. I am inquring about my BUN/creatinine ratio. I took a metabolic panel blood test on 10/28/19 (Fasting/AM Test/Drank 50.6 oz of water prior to test) and my BUN and blood creatinine was 9.8 (Low). My BUN was 8.0 (Normal) and my Creatinine was 0.82 (Normal). I took a non-fasting, afternoon blood test on 10/11/19 and all three levels were normal. My BUN / Creatinine Ratio was 15. Should I be concerned about the BUN/Creatinine Ratio of 9.8? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
fortunately these changes are not significant

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is understandable to be concerned re any changes in blood test values but these changes above are not significant

The urea/bun is on the low side of normal. It is 8, with a range of 8 to 25. Because this is on the low side of normal and the creatinine is plum in the normal range, the ratio would be slightly low.]
The top value is on the low side so division of the top (BUN) by the creatinine would cause a low result.

the ratio of 9.8 is 0.2 below the normal and this would not be considered significant

Creatinine along with GFR (glomerular filtration rate) are a better estimate of kidney function.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
