Hello, I Currently Take 40mg Of Adderall XR In The
Question: Hello, I currently take 40mg of Adderall XR in the morning for my ADHD mixed type. I used to take Desoxyn 5mg BID but found that dosage to be ineffective. I have tried just about every stimulant medication out there for my ADHD and have found the Adderall XR and Desoxyn to be the most effective. I have been on Adderall XR 40mg alone now for about six months. I have noticed it has begun to lose efficacy to the point that I often forget whether or not I even took the medication in the morning because I notice a resurgance of symptoms of ADHD as well as significant comedowns. After doing some research I have concluded that perhaps a better regimen would be less Adderall XR, perhaps 20mg in the morning, and 10mg Desoxyn BID. Research suggests that Desoxyn provides a smoother action and relief of symptoms with less perepheral nervous system activation than Adderall XR. My question is how do I approach my physician about this? I have no history of substance abuse nor any aggravation of psychiatric illness from stimulant use. Do you think that my physician will even consider this an option? Thank you for your time. Cheers.

I can understand your concern. Both Desoxyn and Adderall are stimulant medicines and have good efficacy. You are on 40 mg ADDERALL XR and probably you've developed tolerance to the drug which is resulting in reduced efficacy. In that case we can go for few options.
One is to take drug holiday for a week and then restart the drug. This will help in regaining efficacy again. But there is risk of relapse of ADD symptoms by doing this.
Other option is to increase the dose of ADDERALL which your doctor too should agree. This will help in better control.
Third is you suggested. To take Adderall and Desoxyn together. This can be done and is a good option. You can talk with your doctor for these suggestions and what is best for you.
