Posted on Sun, 14 Feb 2021
Question: Hello, I had a private pregnancy scan last week which showed a sac of 7x5x6 and then a week later it was 11x6.9 - still just a sac.

Is this growth too little to be viable or is there still a chance?

Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Early pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query, there is a definite growth in the gestational sac size which is likely without a foetal pole at present.
It is common to note that foetal pole arrives by 7th to 9th week of gestation ( counting from the last menstrual period). If the foetal pole doesn't arrive by 9th week, then the pregnancy is termed as anembryonic or chemical pregnancy and needs to be terminated.
So it is advisable to repeat the scan again after 2 weeks to check for viability of pregnancy.

Thank you!

Is there a chance the pregnancy is still viable?

I haven't had periods for a few months so unsure of dates. I should be around 6-7 weeks.

Hello,
When was your last menstrual period?
Pleass attch your latest ultrasound for opinion.
The size of the sac doesnt really matter , its the period of gestation.

Hello,

I have uploaded the scan picture they gave me!

I had a period on the 5th of September last as I do not get them on contraception.

So I would say my period is between 5th-10th possibly but they can last long also! The last one would have been average 7th December!

Thank you!

Brief Answer:
early pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
i have gone through the scan and it confirms an intrauterine gestational sac. Considering that your LMP was 7th december, you would be 7 weeks gestation as on date , so you can actually wait for another 2 weeks to check for foetal pole to arrive and foetal heart beat to be seen.
So repeat the scan again after 2 weeks to confirm viability of foetus.
