Hello, I Have Been Prescribed Cefdinir, 300 Mg Twice A

I have been prescribed cefdinir, 300 mg twice a day for 21 days, for my chronic testicular pain, epiditimitis/orchitis perhaps.
I have had swelling and testicular pain for two months now and had an ultrasound of scrotum which indicated nothing unusual other than a varicocele, small hydrocele, and two epiditimal cysts, all on my right side of testes. The pain is primarily on my right testes side. I have taken only two days of this antibiotic and am wondering if I should discontinue this. Can an ultrasound indicate whether a person has epiditimits of a bacterial nature? Perhaps I should not be taking these antibiotics.
I am 67 years old and have high blood pressure (controlled by lisinopril).
What do you think I should do? I follow up with my urologist next week.
Tom
The ultrasound can not say if epididymitis is due to bacteria but because bacterias are the most common cause of epididymitis, antibiotics are almost always prescribed
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,
I carefully read your query and understand your concern.
An ultrasound examination can tell if there is increased blood flow in the epididymis, which is an indication of epididymitis but it can not say for sure that there are bacteria present. On the other hand, bacteria are the most common cause of epididymitis and antibiotics are always recommended.
I would recommend you to take the treatment the doctor has prescribed. Normally, you should start to feel better with the treatment within 3 days. If you are not better with the antibiotics the time that you see the urologist (next week), then very likely this antibiotic is not effective and you do not need to continue it for 21 days.
I hope this answers your query and is helpful to you. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back,
When antibiotics are started they should not be stopped too early as this may pose the risk of antibiotic resistance which may be dangerous.
I would recommend you to take it a full course of a week, till you see the urologist. To help with nausea, take it after food and make sure you eat frequent small amounts of food during the day to help prevent nausea (avoid large meals). If you are not better and you are starting to throw up, you may stop the antibiotic and should let your doctor know.
I hope this answers your query and is helpful to you. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
