Question: Hello. I'm not used to drink coffee, but yesterday I needed to stay up for some hours at night, and I drank a lot of coffee. Was about 1.7L in one day (and I made it very strong), and after that I felt some headaches and I took an aspirin. I almost instantly felt bad, my head got spinning around like I was going to faint, I couldn't really breath normally and my heart was racing even when I was lying down for hours (I still kinda feel like that, but a bit better). I then drank a lot of water to try to amenize the effects and it kinda worked out. I just wanted to ask if it was really something risky with this combination. I really wanted to know why I felt bad like that. Thanks for the help. Have a nice day :)

Itt is most likely an overdose of caffeine.

Detailed Answer:
Hi....
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor"service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX

I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.

Caffeine found in coffee is "technically" a drug.

Aspirin and caffeine are not contraindicated together.
Aspirin and caffeine are being used as a combination product to treat migraine, headaches, muscle pain, arthritis, viral flu and fever.

Aspirin and caffeine combination rather potentiates aspirin and may increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.

Aspirin and caffeine should be regularly used for cardiovascular conditions only under the supervision of a doctor.

In my opinion, you had an overdose of caffeine.

There are different schools of thoughts regarding safe limit of caffeine but usually 200 mg per day is taken as cut off.

Caffeine is a stimulant and an excess of caffeine causes many symptoms involving many body systems.

Usually it presents as nausea, vomitings, diarrhea, pain abdomen ,palpitations, chest pain, rapid breathing, confusion, irritability, hallucinations, dizziness, inability to concentrate, headache, vertigo and even convulsions.

Too much caffeine causes dehydration and you did right by taking rest and rehydrating yourself as soon as you realised.
Some patients might need an emergency medical care where gastric lavage is done, supportive and symptomatic are given and ECG is procured.

I would advise you to restrict your caffeine intake in future.

If your symptoms recur, you should visit your clinician for complete evaluation and physical clinical examination.

Hope that I have answered your query.

Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.
