Question : Hello. I'm on 120 mg Cymbalta daily. I've been on this medication since 2015, first for increasing the pain threshold for my conditions that cause chronic pain. Afterwards, also for bad depression. I don't feel that this medication is helping me so much anymore and also it's making my brain all fuzzy and forgetful. I've been off work since last summer, but now I have to contemplate returning back. And I need a clear mind for that. How would you suggest I taper off this medication, to avoid bad side-effects? Thank you.
Brief Answer:
I recommend to reduce the dose to 30 mg every two weeks.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Cymbalta is a very common medication to treat depression.
It is not recommended to stop Cymbalta immediately.
It can cause withdrawal symptoms when treatment is stopped.
The dose should be lowered gradually.
I see that you are already taking the maximum dose of Cymbalta.
I recommend to reduce the dose to 30 mg every two weeks.
I also recommend to follow up with your general physician in case of any withdrawal symptoms.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
