Question : Hello, I’ve received news that we’re pregnant and I’ve been agonizing because on October 25 my wife had a Hida scan and from what the doctors said we conceived on October 5th and I’m terrified to think that there might be the slightest possibility that the baby could have defects. Could you please advise if there could be any chance that the baby could come with defects?

                                    Brief Answer:
Possibility of risks is very little.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
I have gone through your query and would like to offer some information.
Any form of radiological diagnostic procedure is not harmful to the fetus in majority of cases because the maximum cumulative fetal dose accepted during pregnancy is 5 rads, and no procedure reaches this range.
The most sensitive period for development of the central nervous system is 10 -17 weeks of gestation or 8-15 weeks after conception. As the pregnancy was only 3 weeks at the time of the investigation, it is safe.
Hence it is very unlikely that your baby is exposed to the risk of radiation. Please do not worry but go on with the routine follow up throughout pregnancy. Rest your wife adequately and maintain a healthy diet.
Hope you find this information useful. Please let me know if I can assist you further.
regards,
Shanti.V.
