                                            Question : Hello,
My boyfriend and I have been having sex (unprotected) for about three months. We both recently got tested for STDs, and all of mine came back negative, while he tested positive for herpes, type 2. He’s never had any symptoms, and from what I’ve researched, most people don’t. His number on the test was well over the minimum: it was 14. I’m wondering if I should get tested again in a few months, since I know it takes a while for it to show up after exposure. Or, is it true that most doctors don’t recommend getting tested for herpes unless you’re experiencing symptoms? There’s much stigma around getting a positive herpes 2 result, but it seems that many people test positive for the antibodies, but have zero issues. I guess I’m wondering what we should do, if anything, since getting his positive result.

                                    Brief Answer:
You can redo the test for HSV-2 even after three month.
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Usually herpes simplex 2 is diagnosed by the presence of a blister or multiple blisters in the genital area. This is why doctor do not recommend doing the test if you are experiencing symptoms.
However, just for mental calmness, you can get the test done after 45 days or even 3 months.
Many patients infected with the virus don't even know they have it.
I suggest you not to worry if you don't have symptoms.
Feel free to ask in case of any doubts.
Hope I have answered your query dear.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
