Question : Hello, after breast biopsies I have been diagonosed with LCIS AND ALH in one area of my right breast, ADH in another area of my right breast and ALH in a spot in my left breast. It has been recommended that I have a lumpectomy in all 3 of these areas of my breasts. I'm wondering 1) do I really need the areas removed and 2) what if any are the statistics that the lumpectomies will actually show cancer? I was told that LCIS may hide cancer so I'm more curious than worried. 3) they have also mentioned that I may be put on Tamoxifen, is that really necessary?

                                    Brief Answer:
Lumpectomy is indispensable!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.
I have reviewed your information fully.
1. Lumpectomy is indispensable. Not heeding to surgery puts you at an unacceptable risk for transformation to breast cancer that is highly discouraged
2. Your risk would be 8X for LCIS and 4X for ALH compared to the general population.
3. Whether to start Tamoxifen or not would depend on the pathology report. If the lump is positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors, then you would be considered for this.
I hope this addresses your worries fully. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.

Thank you for your answer, One more question please. What are the chances that they will actually find cancer in the tissue that is removed.Should I be prepared for that possibility? Or is it out of the realm of possibility. Right now I have a very lax attitude, believe it or not. but got to thinking maybe I should be more prepared for the possibility. Thank you.

Oh, and does the ADH also put me at higher risk?

                                    Brief Answer:
ADH alsoputs you at increased risk!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
ADH also puts you at increased risk. I cannot tell for sure what the chances of identifying cancer would be. The best way is to follow up with biopsy/lumpectomy and the pathology report would provide definitive responses.
I am happy you are very relaxed. However, this should not prevent you from following up for proper evaluation and treatment.
