Question: Hello, almost two years ago my appendix burst. The doctors didn't take it out saying they feared that infection would spread. They drained the area and gave me antibiotics. About a year later, I had bone and/or muscle infection was in the hospital for 2 weeks to take the infection out of the right flank. I was then on IV antibiotics for 4 more weeks at home. It is now a year and 8 month later, my busted appendix still has not been taken out. My would from the surgery is still open. And I think I have two more areas infected on my left bum and back area. 1. Since the appendix burst, where does all the stuff go that usually goes into a normal appendix? What is the symptoms of sepesis?

I have had CT Scan and CT scan with contrast, I have had endoscopy and colonoscopy, the doctors don't think it is Crohn's. I haven't had an MRI since the last time I was in the hospital. The last two days by 4:30 PM I am running a fever of 100-103, vomit once, then have night sweats and by 2:00-3:00 am my temperature is back to normal. The doctor has checked the wound periodically and there is no smell and the color is a greenish brown, the consistency is thin. No investigations have been done for the wound. I have not been checked for TB.

Is it safe to have a busted appendix in you?

Brief Answer:
Needs investigations related to persistence of the tract and get treated

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
Symptoms of sepsis are many, few important are fever with chills and sweating; malaise, body ache and so on.
This is a good news that it is not Crohns.
Please insist on investigations related to wound, a biopsy helps a lot in knowing the cause of long standing sinus.
There is something that is not allowing the sinus to heal, this can be necrotic tissues down the sinus, can be fecolith that caused appendicular abscess.
Sinogram helps in known the depth and its connection to which part like appendix, bone or so. Insist on these points to get an appropriate diagnosis and have proper surgical management as per the cause found.
The appendix can be present or gets autolized in some cases. only exploration can tell about the present status.
The other 2 areas you mentioned can be investigated with Ultrasonography or scans, FNAC that is fine needle aspiration cytology.

I hope this answers your queries and helps you.
Please give feedback once you discuss the above points with your treating Surgeon.
